Jeffrey Hinton, known as the godfather of AI (artificial intelligence), said, "AI could become smarter than humans," CNN reported May 1. To caution people that AI is becoming dangerous, Hinton left from Google, where he was vice president.

It is understood that Hinton was previously involved in the AlphaGo AI project at Google, which has been a huge success and is known for beating human world champions in Go tournaments. 1, Hinton confirmed that he had left Google last week so that it would be easier for him to speak publicly about the potential threat of AI.

In an interview, Hinton said he left Google because he was increasingly concerned about the problems that AI could pose, especially when it is used in areas such as weapons development and police surveillance. Currently, he said, every engineer is more concerned about how to make AI more and more powerful than thinking about how it fits into society and the environment. He stressed the importance of having a credible, open and transparent mechanism to ensure that AI is properly regulated and controlled to fulfill its potential and mitigate its negative effects.

In an interview with The Times, Hinton said AI will replace many existing jobs and create a world where people don't know what's real. And, AI is advancing much faster than many experts, including him, expected.

Sinton said, "It used to be that people thought it might take 30 to 50 years for AI to become smarter than humans, but obviously, now I don't think so."

Hinton is not the first to warn about AI development; in late March this year, nearly 1,000 prominent members of the tech community, including Tesla founder Musk, signed an open letter saying they wanted the world's leading AI labs to suspend development for six months because the latest advances in AI "pose a potential threat to human society ". Notably, the letter was released just two weeks after OpenAI, the artificial intelligence research company founded by Musk, released GPT-4, the latest version of ChatGPT. The AI software, in turn, is the most powerful AI system ever released by human society.
